Nisshin Steel Co., Ltd.
Amagasaki Works Receives ISO 14001 Certification

On June 22, 2000, Nisshin Steel Co., Ltd.'s Amagasaki Works received ISO 14001 certification, the international standard for environmental management, from Japan Inspection QA, Inc. (JICQA).

The Amagasaki Works is located in Amagasaki City in Hyogo Prefecture, and manufactures welded stainless steel pipe for construction and ornamental applications and automotive exhaust systems. Nisshin Steel is the industry leader with a 20% share of the domestic stainless steel piping market. The welded stainless steel pipe is used to carry water, oil, and gas. Although unseen by consumers, it is an artery of daily life and production, forming the backbone of the interior and exterior of various structures. Nisshin Steel acknowledges the importance of environmental considerations in both product development and manufacturing processes, and through the ISO 14001 certification, has positioned itself to make further preservation efforts.

Recognizing that environmental preservation is an important part of a company's management base, Nisshin Steel is taking the initiative in environmental preservation with the following measures:
  (1) Contributing to society through development of proprietary
        technologies and products,
  (2) Strengthening its environmental assessment system,
  (3) Voluntary, continuous improvement of its environmental management
        system,
  (4) Promotion of energy saving programs,
  (5) Raising employees' awareness of the global environment at every
        level, and
  (6) Promotion of integration with the local community.

These basic policies contributed to the formation of the Company's Plan for Environmental Preservation Measures, which was established in 1994.

Specifically, with the aim of making continuous improvements in our environmental management system, the Company is promoting Companywide ISO 14001 certification. Five of the Company's steel works involved in the production and treatment of carbon, special, and stainless steel sheet and strip have already received certification.

With the certification of the Amagasaki Works, Nisshin Steel has systematically expanded the scope of its ISO 14001 certification for manufacture of stainless steel pipe in addition to stainless steel sheet and strip.
