About eco-materials
The reduction of CO2 is an important issue among measures to prevent global warming. At Nisshin Steel, based on the voluntary action plan for environmental protection by steelmakers that was worked out by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation in response to the Kyoto Protocol, we are promoting energy conservation and CO2 reduction measures with the goal of reducing our average energy use from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2012 by 10% of what it was in 1990. We are also working to develop and provide long-lifecycle high-function materials to help save energy in society as a whole through more energy-efficient products.
Dealing with the production processes
Nisshin Steel is responding quickly to the public demand for responsible corporate activities including compliance with laws and regulations, promotion of resource recycling, tighter control of hazardous pollutants, and CO2 reduction through energy conservation. In addition, we are working to strengthen all corporate management activities that concern environmental protection, including the development and provision of products that take the environment into consideration (eco-materials).
The overall policy is set by the management council, activities to reduce the environmental impact are furthered by the environment and energy council, and the marketing of environmentally products is furthered by the research and development council and the marketing council.

Recent examples of energy conservation measures
1) Introduction of an energy-saving regenerative thermal oxidizer
Applicable equipment:Ichikawa Works coating equipment deodorization furnace
With a grant from NEDO (the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) for business of companies in support of energy use rationalization, we have updated our coating equipment deodorization furnace that removes volatile organic compounds (VOC) to an energy-saving regenerative type. By greatly reducing the temperature of the exhaust gas, the unit cost of energy at the Ichikawa Works has been reduced by about 3%.

2) Black body conversion of heating cover
Applicable equipment:Sakai Works tight-coil annealing furnace
By giving the inner wall of a furnace a high-heat-radiation coating, the quantity of radiant transferred heat that reaches the object being heated (the coil) is improved, and by reducing the quantity of heat source supplied, the quantity of fuel used has been reduced by 4.7%.

3) Greater steam turbine efficiency
Applicable equipment:Kure Works No. 6 steam turbine
The No. 6 steam turbine, which is the main machine used to produce privately generated power, underwent a partial update involving the application of the latest technology, including high-efficiency vanes; the result was a 5.2% improvement in the power generation efficiency.
