Environmental
control promotion system |
 |
Nisshin
Steel is responding quickly to the public demand for responsible corporate
activities including compliance with laws and regulations, promotion
of resource recycling, tighter control of hazardous pollutants, and
CO2 reduction through energy conservation.
In addition, we are working to strengthen all corporate management
activities that concern environmental protection, including the development
and provision of products that take the environment into consideration
(eco-materials).
The overall policy
is set by the management council, activities to reduce the environmental
impact are furthered by the environment and energy council, and the
marketing of environmentally products is furthered by the research
and development council and the marketing council. |

Environmental
assessment system |
 |
We
are building an assessment system to ensure the implementation of
environmental protection activities. |
 |
| 1)
|
Implementation
of measures to reduce the environmental impact in production
processes |
| |
In
order to comply with laws and regulations and prevent environmental
mishaps, when installing manufacturing equipment it is important
fully confirm conformity with laws and regulations and to ensure
the safety system should an emergency occur. To this end, we
carry out environmental and disaster preparedness assessments.
Also, under the environmental management system we do assessments
concerning purchasing, manufacturing, sales, and recycling. |
| |
| 2)
|
Providing products
that contribute the environmental protection |
| |
At
Nisshin Steel, we carry out product assessments in order to
develop products that contribute to environmental preservation
and improvement and are used by the public and in processing
by the customer, and in order to develop products that have
little environmental impact in our production process.
We also study LCA* (Life Cycle Assessment, ISO 14040)
activities in order to develop products for a society in harmony
with the environment. |
| |
|
| * |
Steel LCA is a technique for clarifying
the materials and energy that are used, and the substances that
are discharged, from the mining and transport of the steel raw
materials until the steel product leaves factory, and for assessing
how the environment is thereby affected. This technique is still
in the research stage, but it will make it possible to select
products and production processes that impose less of a burden
on the environment. LCA on steel products is currently being
researched by the International Iron and Steel Institute, the
Japan Iron and Steel Federation, and the Japan Stainless Steel
Association, and Nisshin Steel is also participating in this
research to create products that are gentle the environment
and to people. |

Promotion
of ISO 14001 certification |
 |
ISO
14001 is an international standard for environmental management
systems issued by the International Organization for Standardization
for maintaining and continually improving environmental measures.
Acquiring certification in such "environmental management systems"
leads to continual autonomous improvements in the company's environmental
systems.
We obtained certification
for all seven of our manufacturing works by September 2001, and
under this system internal audits are periodically carried out to
upgrade our environmental efforts. The companies in our group have
also obtained certification and are working to expand it step by
step.
