Steelmaking to meet environmental needs
Nisshin Steel has been meeting the needs of the times and of society
by working to give steel, especially surface-treated plate and sheet
steel, stainless steel, and special steel, longer life, greater
functionality, and more attractive design. And anticipating today's
growing concern with environmental issues from a regional to a global
scale, we are leading the evolution toward steelmaking that meets
the needs of the environment.
With an awareness
that "protecting the environment is the keynote for management,"
we are active in environmental management built on three main pillars:
(1) activities to reduce the environmental impact in production
processes, (2) providing products that make a contribution to environmental
protection, and (3) participation of everyone in the Nisshin Steel
group.
To reduce the environmental
impact throughout the manufacturing process, our affiliated companies
are actively engaged in ways to protect the environment, save energy,
and recycle resources, investing in the necessary equipment and
establishing manufacturing processes that are efficient and kind
to the environment.

In addition, we are working to completely
capture all the byproducts produced in the manufacturing process,
and as part of these zero-emissions efforts we are developing recycling
technology and promoting the collection and recycling of local byproducts.
Faithful to the basics
What is
important in environmental management is to have a system to ensure
that environmental accidents do not happen and to minimize their effects
if they do. Essential here is not just the hardware of equipment but
also the software of the people who operate the equipment in full
awareness of the environment. It is important not just to monitor
environmental data but also to be aware of the risk associated with
changes in the data, and through retraining we seek to maintain and
improve the awareness and abilities of the people who are to recognize
such changes.
The evolution of steel
products can be achieved by making sure that the needs of customers
do not go unnoticed at any stage, from sales to development, research,
and manufacturing.
This information is shared throughout the company and is essential
for uncovering the very existence of problems. It is part of acting
together as a group, faithful to the basics around our ISO environmental
management system in an ever-ascending spiral of the PDCA cycle for
environmental protection.
Environmental protection through eco-materials
Our products are "products (eco-materials) that are kind to the
environment and to people," in which the steel is given high-function
added value. Through high-function products we help protect the environment
while meeting the public's demanding and various environmental needs,
including forestalling global warming, saving energy and resources,
and reducing waste products.
Our
unique high-function DNA-SUS stainless steel series, which is currently
under development, makes it possible to have options that broadly
contribute to environmental protection by eliminating heat treatments
in the manufacturing process and developing environmental improvement
applications in fields where there is a demand for longer lifecycle
and greater workability. Our highly corrosion-resistant hot-dip coated
steel sheet "ZAM® " is noted for having 5 to 8 times the
corrosion resistance of our previous zinc-aluminum coated steel sheet,
has been newly adopted in a variety of fields related to the environment
and people, and helps protect the environment through a longer useful
lifetime for customers' products.
In
addition, we stand ready with chromium-free surface-treated sheet
steels for various applications to rapidly comply with the European
ELV and RoHS directives and other regulations governing chemical substances
contained in products.
Aware
that our business activities are based on coexistence and cooperation
with the local community, we have prepared this environmental report
to more deeply communicate with you about the environment and convey
our approach to environmental management and what we have accomplished
thus far.
We
would appreciate your continued support and understanding of our business
activities and our efforts to safeguard the environment.
